The Modern Momma’s Guide To Fashion {Part I}

I’m a momma…goldfish fingerprints on my pants, snobbery face wipes on my shoulder and all.
I have had those moments where I’m dressed for 3.4 seconds and some form of LJ goo magically appears on my clothes.
I have left the house in jeans to only to have my amazing SIL point out that LJ has mashed chocolate right into the bum as she wipes it off with baby wipes (that’s love, right?).
Just because I’m a momma doesn’t mean I have to give up all hopes of looking put together. Through my journey to find my style I’ve found there are some wardrobe must haves to make my inexpensive, child friendly wardrobe go the distance.
So today I present to you…

The Modern Momma’s Guide to Fashion {Part I}
1. Well Fitting NICE Jeans
Every momma needs one pair NICE, well fitting jeans. I have a closet full of Old Navy jeans that stretch out within the first hour. These are great for playing at the park, crawling around in the sandbox, going to Costco…yada yada.
But to have that ONE pair of jeans that fit you like a glove is a must for every momma. My fav are the Gap Curvy jeans. I keep them long so I can wear them with wedges or heels to make my legs look extra long and lean…love!
2. Blazer

Classic, timeless, chic. A blazer will never go out of style. Throw it over a sparkly top and you’re ready for a night out.
Put it on with jeans and a simple tee to add some interest to a casual outfit. Throw it over a dress to give some structure. Or pair it with coordinating trousers or skirt for an instant suit. However you wear a blazer, it’s a timeless piece that everyone needs to have.
3. Basic Tees
Solid, striped, polka dotted…whatever. A collection of basic tees will take you far. Layer them for dimension, put one under a dress or tank top to cover up, or tuck into a full skirt for a chic look.
Basic tees are a foundation piece that your wardrobe simply can’t live without.
4. Black Pumps
Without a doubt, the modern momma’s go to dress shoe. Pick a style that’s modern, yet classic. A round or super pointy toe, mid to high heel, not “too much” shoe so it looks fresh, not from the early 90s. There are tons of great options at all price points, so you are sure to find the right shoe for you!
5. Cardigans
Solid, patterned, textured, plain….cardigans are the must have I avoided for far too long. That same plain jeans and tee can be instantly styled by adding an awesome cardigan. Make sure you get ones that truly fit bordering on too small. By wearing a too big cardigan you might as well be wearing potato sack. Cardigans should help highlight your shape, not hide it.

I hope this first installment of The Modern Momma’s Guide To Fashion will help you take a look at your closet and see if what you have is working for you. A great wardrobe is built on a foundation of basics.

Real Momma, Real Style {Fashion Week Edition}

IT’S FASHION WEEK!!!!

To commemorate this week of pure fashion awesomeness, I thought this week’s Real Momma, Real Style would be a great time to take a trip down memory lane.

Some of you may remember that fashion originally played NO part in Momma Go Round. Who the heck was I to talk about fashion??? When we took LJ to go see his first movie last summer, I got “cute” by wearing this…

I know, hold the applause. Stunning, right?

So I decided to branch out the wardrobe a bit and did a five part series on how I was branching out….

This was post #1…a knit hat and a t-shirt….don’t hurt yourself there now Nina. But, at the time it was different for me, so I was proud.

The very first Real Momma, Real Style actually saw a leap into the land of “I tried”.

Not too shabby…the belted thing was new. A collared shirt under a sweater was too. But I was still playing in the land of colors and styles I was comfy with.

And then came the dreaded SKINNY JEANSbum bum bum. Here came the big guns. For those of you who are new here, or need a little reminder, I’m 5’2″ on a good day when I get out of bed and stretch, and I was THRILLED when my weight started with a 1 again. I always thought skinny jeans were the devilLittle did I know they would come be my favs because they actually stretch in the hips but yet come in at the waist so no gap…HOORAY!

Pretty soon scary colors and the dreaded tucking in entered the wardrobe. Finally, I feel like I’m getting somewhere.

Though my journey is far from over, I am excited at all I’ve learned.

When I look good, I feel good.
I am worth taking care of myself.
A happy me = a happy home.
My boys deserve the best me possible, not the slopped together me I kept giving them.

So this week mommas, I CHALLENGE YOU to take a step forward. Try something new! Put on that color that scares you back into bed! Tuck in your top or wear those skinny jeans out of the house. DO SOMETHING FOR YOURSELF!

This weekend I’ll be hosting a special NEW STYLE LINK UP where you can show off your new look from this week. I can’t wait to see what you all try!!!!

What I Learned About Mother’s Day

In TV shows and movies, Mother’s Day is always depicted as this perfectly blissful day for Mom.

breakfast in bed
massages
mani/pedi
naps
lavish meals
laying out by the pool
a whole lotta nothing

This dream image of Mother’s Day, while totally awesome, is totally not accurate.

All that pampering and lounging sounds fabulous, peaceful, relaxing, and gloriously child-free. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll sign up for that club any day….just not today.

My Mother’s Day started at 2am, then 4am, then 5:30am, again at 6:15am, and then was officially on at 7:45am. I got to stay in bed until 9:00 when my boys brought me breakfast in bed. Hot chocolate and french toast with raspberries…that LJ proceeded to steal.

Breakfast was beautiful, that little berry stealing face was adorable, but my “Mommy and Me” activity wheel stole the show.

Off to church we went, where my baby slept in my lap and proceeded to take off and put back on all my bracelets over and over again. I loved the sleepy snuggles and “rug burn” on my arm from the bracelets….

but this tiny handprint will forever mean the world to me.

A peaceful, restful day at home with my boys would have been perfect, but that wasn’t in the cards for us today.

But my favorite flowers from my favorite guy made this day perfect.

Today I learned that Mother’s Day is not about what presents I get, or how much time off I’m given, or what pampering I get to go do….but what my boys and my little family means to me. Time together and sweet little cards, a precious little handprint, and a thoughtful gift are more than this momma could have asked for!
