Paradise

Sure, I pay more for my 2 bedroom apartment than most of the country pays for a 5 bedroom home.

Sure, my gas prices are usually some of the highest in the nation.

Sure, during the middle of summer you can see the CHUNKY air as you drive into the valley.

But yesterday, despite all of it’s drawbacks, LA was PARADISE.

Paradise Cove that is….and this was the view from my breakfast table :)
LJ and Daddy took a stroll on the beach.
And lounged in the sun.

Jeans: Old Navy  Blouse: Old Navy  Undershirt: Downeast Basics
While I rocked a new look! Skinny jeans with flats (sand + flats = sucky) with a longer blousy top. Jury is still out on the top since I think the sleeves might be a little large…but that’s an easy fix.

Just another winter day in LA ;)

A black and white striped moment in fact. Lately I find myself oogling and drooling over all thing black and white striped.
It’s clean. It’s fresh. It’s modern. It’ll hide LJ goop. It’s just plain awesome!
Here’s just a sampling of stripes at their best that I would love to own!
I wish I could have them ALL!

Style For Your Shape {with Honeybear Lane and The Mom Uniform}

I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited today to have the amazingly awesome, brilliant, and stylish Heidi guest posting! I love this girl and I KNOW you will too.
Take it away Heidi!

Hi there!

My name is Heidi and I’m from the blog Honeybear Lane.

First off, let me just say what we’re all thinking…

Nina is the nicest and friendliest person ever!!
Okay.  So I recently started a new blog called The Mom Uniform and Nina invited me to do a little guest post here today!
I’m thrilled to be here!
I started my blog, The Mom Uniform, in an effort to improve my own frumpy Mom style.  I wanted to figure out what looked good on me and what things I actually liked.  But as my little journey has progressed, I realized one very essential thing:
I wasn’t dressing for my body type.
Growing up, I was pretty stick-skinny.  I had no curves until I was like 19, seriously.  And when I got married, those little pounds started creeping on me without me even realizing it!  Then I got pregnant and now I have two kids.  And a new body.
And no clue how to dress for it.
So lots of my readers from The Mom Uniform have made very encouraging comments and offered their opinions on what works and what doesn’t.  I actually really appreciate the advice and love the feedback.  It’s helped so much already!
Moving on…

Let’s discuss body types:

There’s a lot of different names for the various body types, but I found a great site called Shop Your Shape that helps you determine your actual body type.  Then they even suggest what types of clothes would look best on you!

According to my measurements, I’m the Spoon body type.
It said:

“The key to dressing a Spoon body type is to draw attention to your upper body while deemphasizing your tummy and hips to create a more balanced appearance and create the illusion of an hourglass figure. Your legs are your best asset, so feel free to play with skirt lengths and show them off!”

So with this knowledge in hand…
Apparently these outfits work for me:
And these didn’t:

It’s sometimes hard to hear, but the feedback from my readers has really helped my progression…the three outfits above that didn’t work were my earlier outfits.
And clearly I’m still figuring it out.
Are you?

Come and join me on my journey as I figure out how to dress for my body type and inspire you to dress for yours!
I told you she is the best!
I’m a spoon shape too and never would have known it!!! Sweetness :) Thanks so much for teaching us all Heidi!

A Meal In The Mail

In my church, the women’s organization is ALWAY there when someone is in need. One of the most helpful services we provide is meals. Sick, just gave birth, death in the family, fallen upon hard times….meals are arranged.

My girl, Big Fat Mama from Cooking Up Faith, has come up with a wonderful idea to bring this concept to families in need….no matter where they are or what they believe.

Big Fat Mama shares on her blog the beautiful story of how A Meal In The Mail began: “A Meal in the Mail Ministry started when I decided to find a way to use my blog to help others.”

He has given you the whole world to use, and life and even death are your servants. He has given you all of the present and all of the future. All are yours, and you belong to Christ, and Christ is God’s.

1 Corinthians 3:22,23

This month, two deserving families are highlighted for us to send some love to.

This is Joanne. On January 11th Joanne, 38, suffered a major stroke. She is in the hospital now in a coma. She has a husband, Toben, and two daughters Audrey and Emma.

Joel
This is Joel. Nine months ago Joel had a Medulloblasta cancerous tumor removed.
If you would like to help by sending gift cards for restaurants, grocery stores, or simply cash, or to learn how to become or nominate a featured family, please visit Cooking Up Faith with Big Fat Mama.

Because sometimes a good meal is just what’s needed.

Chocolate Sprinkle Spoons {Tutorial}

My hubby LOVES hot chocolate.

We buy the Costco box of mix all the time. We have special hot chocolate mugs. We have a stockpile of marshmallows ready for a chocolate bath…yum!

For Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be fun (and yummy too!) to make up some special chocolatey spoons for BSB to enjoy his hot chocolate with.

Chocolate Sprinkle Spoons

Materials:

plastic spoons
white chocolate
sprinkles
wax paper
2 bowls

Put white chocolate in microwave safe bowl and melt on 1/2 power in 15-30 second intervals, stirring inbetween.

Dip plastic spoon in melted chocolate. Use another spoon to help smooth it out. You want a light-medium coat. Don’t glob it on!

Sprinkle your sprinkles (hehe) over your chocolate spoon. DO NOT DIP!

Lay spoons on wax paper to harden.

Serve with your favorite hot chocolate and enjoy!

Since we use cheap-o packet hot chocolate, these really added a nice thickness and richness to it. Very $3.50 cup of hot chocolate if you ask me :)

The Art of Thrifting {with Yours, Mine & Ours}

A few weeks ago I introduced you to my newest friend Meredith. She’s fun, she’s spunky, she’s crazy, and we randomly have a ton of the same friends even though we’ve never met…..crazy!

Anyways, Meredith is like the most uh-maz-ing thrifty shopper. Seriously, she looks smokin’ all the time. Best of all, she hardly pays a thing for her rockin’ outfits!

So sit back, relax, and prepare to be schooled in the art of thrifting!

Mahalo!!

So Nina is like the coolest and asked me to guest post on pretty much whatever I wanted.

Well, if you’ve ever seen my blog, Yours, Mine & Ours, you know I love thrifting.

I’ve literally been a thrift shopper my whole life and pretty much a lot of my clothes/my kid’s clothes are from one thrift or another.
A lot.

Either that or they’re from the freepile.
But that’s another story.  :)

Anyway, here are some of my tried and true thrifting tips:
(Take ‘em or leave ‘em)

*Know your brands. For example, if you find a great deal on a J.Crew piece, you’re gonna get way more wear/bragging rights than if you just bought a slightly cheaper Faded Glory item (not that there’s anything wrong with Wal-Mart clothes. Just an example!).

*Go on deal days. Most thrift stores have half off days (usually Friday but ask to be sure) that equal even bigger savings. Plus, some stores have deals every day where a certain color tag is discounted. Ask your local store(s) about stuff like that.

*Go in knowing what you want and then look for those items. If you happen to find some other great stuff along the way, fab! But remember, buying a bunch of stuff you’re never gonna wear/use, even if it is cheaper, isn’t really saving you moolah  (but it is way better to go crazy in a thrift store if you just have to go shopping. Trust me;))

*Find out how your specific store organizes their items. Some do it by price, size, color, donation date, etc. My fave Goodwill goes with the color method. I love it.

*Go with your friends/sisters/mom/whoever!! and get ready for some not-so-serious, or spendy, shopping fun!

{Me and my little sis thrifting it up! I’m the crazy in peach.}
Thanks Mer!!! I’m so excited to get my thrift on and see what gems I can come up with :)
Make sure to check out all of Meredith’s thrifting genius on Yours, Mine & Ours!

July (Strike That) January in LA

While the rest of the country is stuck under feet of snow, or pouring rain, or temperatures that this girl does not do….we are experiencing summer in the middle of winter here in LA!

To soak up as much sun as possible the other day, we headed out to our favorite outdoor mall with their awesome playground and fountain.

LJ and Baby W enjoyed snacks at the playground.

I think LJ drank more water (so gross!) than anything, but he had a blast!

And my favorite part of the day….LJ showed his Auntie Ashley just how much he LOVES her!

Gotta love LA!
